Detailing & Protecting Your Boat
With Spectacular Detailing
Boat Detailing is the best way to get your boat in great condition. Then add protection to keep it that way.
The detail will remove oxidation, rust, mould, mildew & environmental damage.
The protection will slow the deteriation due to UV rays, salt water & environmental factors.
Does My Boat Need Detailing?
All boats are prone to oxidation, which causes the surface to deteriorate over time. Just like fruit goes brown when it is cut open and left.
The combination of water, salt & sun (heat & UV rays)all contribute. Water encourages mould, mildew & rust. Salt corodes & The Sun causes deterioration. Together these factors continuously wear away at the surfaces of your boat. If left unchecked the damage can become irreversable.
Boats in Australia are exposed to constant intense sunlight throughout the year. Picture yourself on the beach in the sun, the heat is intense at times, if you stay in the sun without sunscreen or cover your skin is going to get very damaged very quickly. Your boat is the same. If it is left out without protection it will deteriorate fast.
A new boat has approximately 24mm of gelcoat. Worldwide on average, if left unportected you will loose 1mm per year. Each year your boat is getting a thinner gelcoat, until eventually it has little to none.
Nearly every boat could do with some level of restoration.
That is what we do best!
What Causes Oxidation On My Boat?
Oxidation is a chemical reaction. The most commonly recognised oxidation is rust which is iron or steel oxidating caused by oxygen from water and air. Your gelcoat is oxidised by a reaction to UV rays, heat & environmental influences such as salt. When your Gelcoat oxidises it goes dull and turns chalky. Paint also goes chalky & dull when it oxidises.
How Do I Fix Oxidation On My Boat?
To fix oxidation we need to remove the oxidation and then protect the unoxidised surface. If it is not removed then it will come back quickly. When you get rust in a car you need to remove it and then protect it, your gelcoat & paint are the same.
All surfaces on your boat are affected by oxidation of some sort, caused by water, salt, UV rays, heat & other environmetal toxins.

Let Go Through The Different Stages Of Detailing
- Wet/Dry Sanding:
Sanding is an essential part of boat restoration. Not every boat requires sanding. Sanding is the most effective method for removing oxidisation. Oxidation breaks down your gelcoat from the outside in, the more oxidised your boat is the deeper it gets into the gelcoat. Compound buffing can remove surface oxidisation, but if it is established then sanding is the only option to reveal the fresh gelcoat. Sanding is good for your boat when it gets oxidised. It saves your gelcoat from longterm damage. - Compound Buffing:
Compound buffing will give you the largest visual change to your boats appearance. Thats why everyone wants to attack it with a rotary buffer. It gives the impression that it fixes the problem. It doesn’t in most cases. Sanding is more agressive than buffing and removes the gelcoat, compound buffing refines the gelcoat. In this step we are eliminating scratches & imperfections, and we restore the gelcoat to it’s natural shine using a deminishing abrasive compound. - Polishing:
Polishing is the final buffing stage, it removes swirls, further refines scratches and takes the shine to a level greater than new gelcoat or paint. Polishing is completed with a random orbital polisher which has a different action from the rotary used for compounding. It removes swirls and holograms from the gelcoat or paint. The Random Orbital polisher is specifically designed to finish surfaces before protection. - Protection:
Protection is the final stage of the restoration process. Without protection the oxydation will quickly return, undoing all of the work we have just completed. Spectacular Detailing will always protect the surface with a high quality protectant.
You can choose from Premium Sealants & Ceramic Coatings, dependant on your budget and how you store and use your boat.
Protection Options For Your Boat With Spectacular Detailing
Waxes
** 2 – 5 weeks protection
Not Available
Waxes are old technology that Spectacular detailing does not recommend.
Wax is an abrasive that can actually scratch the surface of your boat, it also provides protection for a very short period of time. Think of lipstick, when you rub up against it it transfers to what ever it connects to.
It will generally only last about 2 weeks on a boat before it stops providing protection. You therefore need to constantly reapply which is labour intensive and pointless with much better options now available.
Spray Sealants
** 3 – 6 months protection
Great Medium Term
Spray Sealants come in two varieties polymer & ceramic that are high quality protection systems, they are effective by cross linking together to form a covalent bond (strong).
Spray Sealants are easy to apply, work well on multiple surface types, and are excellent for increasing the gloss of your boat.
They form a physical barrier between the coated surface and the environment. They block chemicals including salt, they reduce staining and make your boat easy to clean.
Ceramic Coatings
** 1 – 2 years protection
Excellent Long Term
Ceramic Coatings are one of the most advanced protection systems that you can use on your boat.
Ceramic Coatings bond directly with your gelcoat or paint to form a strong longterm barrier between your boat and the environment. They require a high level of preparation and take longer to apply than spray sealants, but the additional work provides much longer term protection.
Ceramic Coatings are excellent for increasing the gloss of your boat and the block chemicals including salt, they reduce staining and make your boat easy to clean.
** Note: All coatings are affected by the environment that your boat is in, a boat that spends all of it’s time in salt water and the weather is going to have a shorter lifespan of a coating compared to one that only gets occasionally launched in fresh water and is stored undercover.
